Between one universe and the next, Vishnu sleeps on the endless serpent, afloat on the ocean of milk.
Ananta means “without end”. Shesha, the thousand-hooded serpent, is what remains when everything else dissolves, and he becomes the bed of the Preserver. Vishnu lies in yoga-nidrā, the sleep that is fully awake. Lakshmi sits at his feet. From his navel a lotus rises, and on it Brahma opens his eyes to begin the world again.
Here, the night sky and the still water are the point. Nothing hurries. Even the fish move slowly. This is the pause the whole cosmos rests in, before the next breath of creation.
